The recent demonetisation of currency reportedly kept children of a worker in Andhra from seeing their father for the last time and performing his last rites.
Kokkila Karavayya (52), passed away at Tekkalipatnam in Srikakulam returned home two months ago due to his illness. He used to do odd jobs in Hyderabad.
Following his death, his wife Narayanamma, sent a message to their son, Appalaswamy and two daughters, Uma and Saraswathi, asking them to come back to perform the rituals.
The three children being construction labourers in Hyderabad, were reported to have no Rs 100 notes.
It was reported that due to this, they asked their mother to perform the last rites.
The villagers donated money for the funeral, as Narayanamma, herself was left with no money or any relatives by her side.
A villager of Tekkalipatnam, Tulasi Ram told the Times of India, “The entire village contributed to perform the last rites of Karavayya. It was a very sad incident. The shortage of currency had denied the old man the opportunity to see his children for the last time.”
