Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu submitted his resignation to the state’s Governor on Thursday evening after the YSRCP recorded a landslide victory in Assembly elections. At the time of writing, YSRCP was leading in 111 seats out of 175 seats and was declared the winner in 38 seats.

The TDP was leading in 20 seats and won only five seats in the Assembly polls. In the Lok Sabha polls too, the YSRCP recorded a clean sweep with the party leading in 22 of 25 seats at the time of writing.

“Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh submitted his resignation to the Governor. The Hon'ble Governor while accepting the resignation with effect from the Afternoon today, requested Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu to continue in office till the formation of a new Government,” a press release from the Secretary to the Governor read.

“Elections have concluded, and counting has happened. In a democracy, the people's verdict must be respected. I express my heartfelt congratulations to YS Jagan and YCP on his victory,” Naidu said after conceding defeat. 

Jagan Mohan Reddy's swearing-in ceremony will be held in Vijayawada on May 30.

Jana Sena Party president, actor Pawan Kalyan who had contested in both Bhimavaram and Gajuwaka, also was defeated in both the seats by YSRCP candidates.

Buoyed by the stupendous victory, addressing the media from the YSRCP office in Tadepalli, Jagan said, “The people of Andhra Pradesh have given me a resounding victory. No one in the state has probably ever seen a victory of such stature. I will do everything I can for the people of Andhra Pradesh. I would like to reiterate that this mandate comes with a tremendous responsibility and that I will work to live up to the expectations (I am held up to).”
