In a shocking incident in Andhra Pradesh, 24-year-old Ramya* was brutally thrashed by her husband, Rajesh, on the day of their wedding, allegedly because she got to know that he was impotent and told her parents about it.
Ramya was beaten, her private parts were attacked, and Rajesh inflicted injuries on Ramya with a knife.
Ramya, a second-year MBA student, was married to Rajesh, a government school teacher on December 1.
The incident occurred in Motharangapalle village in Gangadharanellore Mandal, which is part of Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district.
Speaking to TNM, Loknadh Reddy, Ramya's brother, said that Rajesh almost tried to kill her. Recounting the events as told to him by his sister, Loknadh said on their wedding night, Ramya got to know that Rajesh was impotent. When Rajesh threatened her not to tell anyone else, she came out of the room and decided to go sleep in her mother’s room. At this point, Ramya told her parents about Rajesh’s impotence, but was convinced by her parents that Rajesh might just be nervous, and sent back to Rajesh’s room.
"After she went back in, Rajesh threatened to kill Ramya because she told her mother, and tried to suffocate her with a towel, and then sat on her chest. He hit her. He tried to strangle her. There was a knife kept there for an apple. He attacked her with that as well," Loknadh says.
When asked about how she finally managed to escape, Loknadh said, "There was noise from the room as a glass had fallen to the ground. When the parents tried to intervene, he (Rajesh) didn't open the door. When they finally broke open the door, she was lying in a pool of blood on the floor."
Ramya was taken to a hospital in Chittoor, from where she was referred to a hospital in Tirupati.
"He punched me on my face and kicked me on sensitive body parts, besides biting me all over and inflicting injuries with a knife,” Ramya told the media.
Speaking to Sakshi TV, Ramya said that his parents knew about Rajesh’s problem. "He made me promise that I wouldn't tell anyone about it, but I went out and told my parents about it," she said. In the visuals, Ramya’s speech is slurred, her face is swollen, and she can barely open her eyes.
A case has been registered against Rajesh at the police station in Gangadhara Police Station. Sub-Inspector Rajashekhar told TNM that Rajesh has been booked under IPC sections 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).
While Rajashekhar told TNM that Ramya is out of danger, Loknadh said that the tests were still being conducted, and they have not received the reports so far.
