If you were told that Flipkart had as many as 23 Senior Vice Presidents in 2016, it may sound unbelievable. But the ecommerce giant has since pruned this to just four. That is if you include 4 who have been elevated from within the organization this past few days. The CEO of Flipkart, Kalyan Krishnamoorthy is said to have tightened the ship after taking over. When he was brought back to the company in 2016, he changed the very structure of the setup from being a top-heavy one, reports Economic Times.
There has been a shift in the HR strategy as well, with more executives being promoted from within than being recruited from outside.
And there have been many changes at the top too, with the two co-founders leaving one after the other. While Sachin Bansal left during the takeover of Flipkart by Walmart, Binny Bansal left after the acquisition. Then there was a huge change in the way the two fashion brands Myntra and Jabong were handled. These were operating independent of Flipkart with a CEO Anantha Narayanan heading it and reporting to Bansal. But the new management changed this and said all back-end and support functions of the two sub-brands be merged with Flipkart Fashion and the Narayana was asked to report to Flipkart CEO Krishnamoorthy. This subsequently led to Anantha Narayanan and half a dozen senior executives across functions quitting and moving on.
This has helped Kalyan Krishnamoorthy rejig the management and put the people he has nurtured over the years in crucial positions, reporting to him.
So, Anil Goteti, Rishi Vasudev, Ajay Veer Yadav and Adarsh K Menon are the new Senior Vice Presidents, promoted from within. Amar Nagaram has taken over as the Chief Technology and Product Officer, a new position created with no separate CEO. He was with the main Flipkart entity. There have been other lateral movements between Myntra-Jabong and Flipkart as well. In fact, the entire support staff at Myntra-Jabong have been shifted to Bangalore where Flipkart’s HQ is situated, from Gurugram. The company downsized these outfits during the merger.
Kalyan Krishnamoorthy maintains that despite these changes at the very top level in the organization, the company’s operations were never hit. The CEO has also pointed out that they have a good rewards programme that helps retain talent and the overall attrition rate that Flipkart experiences is comparable to the other hot sectors like IT and not very high.
