Micromax has had its heydays. However, of late, the Chinese competitors have virtually swamped the market for smartphones. But the Indian smartphone company hasn’t lost heart. It has now come up with a smartphone for the high-end buyers. In the Indian context, phones costing above Rs.20,000 are bracketed at one level. The Micromax Dual 5 is an attempt by the Indian manufacturer to try and get a slice of the market in this segment.

Display and other specs

A dual SIM phone, the latest flagship from Micromax will sport a 5.5inch display and the resolution and density are 1080x1920 and 401ppi respectively. The multi-touch display screen, is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Despite being a latest (April 2017) release, the Micromax Dual 5 will run on the Android Marshmallow only. The CPU is the Qualcomm MSM8976 Snapdragon 652, octa-core processor and the GPU, Adreno 510. So far so good! The RAM is also a decent 4GB and the storage 128GB. With this level of internal memory, one may not need the cushion of a slot for the microSD card. But current indications are that the second slot will accommodate either a SIM or a microSD card of up to 128GB.

It’s the Camera that Micromax is betting on

Somehow, every smartphone manufacturer launching their models in India does place a lot of emphasis on the camera. They might have studied the typical psychology of the Indian mobile phone user and designed their marketing strategy accordingly. The Micromax Dual 5 will be having 13MP cameras, all 3 of them, two at the rear and one on the front. While the rear camera has a dual tone flash, the front one has a soft flash. What’s more, the phone also has a feature to save your photos in a secure folder which can only be accessed with your fingerprint. Yes, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor rounds up the main phone’s specs.

With a 3200mAh battery and the Quick Charge 3.0 feature that ensures your fully drained battery is charged to 95% in just 45 minutes, you will feel you have sufficient power in your hands. The phone is being released only in one colour, Gold.

Review of the Micromax Dual 5 Specs and Performance

The experts seem to feel that the phone has many things going for it starting from the very appearance and the specs are quite comparable for the phone’s price. One significant feature in the Micromax Dual 5 is security related. The phone allows you to set up an anti-theft app through the Google account and even if your phone gets stolen, it can be traced easily. Another unique feature is the SafeSwitch feature where the phone's main buttons get locked as soon as the SIM card is removed, which is what thieves do. The only way this SafeSwitch can be de-activated is to enter a password within 30 seconds. In fact, if the password is not typed in within 60 seconds of the SIM being pulled out, then the phone will delete all the data inside it. Moreover, if the robber attempts to unlock the phone, then it automatically takes a photograph of the person and sends it to the phone owner’s mail ID.

These extra security features do make the Micromax Dual 5 a phone many discerning buyers may be interested in.

The phone is being sold on Flipkart for Rs.24,999.
