Revelling in the success of his two releases this year, Kaala and 2.0, Rajinikanth is gearing up for his next, Petta, the trailer for which was released on Friday.

The trailer establishes Rajini’s invincibility and in fact has a recreation of his iconic gate opening shot from his debut film, Apoorva Raagangal, in one of the beginning shots. Rajini plays Kaali, a hostel warden with a past. All the major actors make an entry in this 2.30 min trailer.

The trailer also announces that Petta will release just ahead of Pongal, on January 10, 2019.

Earlier this month, on the occasion of the star’s birthday, the makers had released a one-minute-30-second teaser that was immediately lapped up by fans. The teaser had a very celebratory ring to it, infused with a generous dose of nostalgia. The clip ended with Rajini flipping his sunglasses in his trademark style while looking at himself in the mirror. The teaser also had Rajini’s title music from the 90s.

Karthik Subbaraj, the film’s director, had previously shared that Petta is a story that was inspired by, performed by and dedicated to Rajinikanth. Speaking at the film’s audio launch, Karthik Subbaraj said that his dream of making a film with the Superstar looked bleak, especially after the latter announced his entry into politics.

“I had narrated the story to him in 2015 but it had to wait since he went on to do Kaala and then later announced his political entry. I kept thinking my life would remain incomplete if I never got the chance to work with him,” he said.

Petta’s music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who is collaborating with Rajinikanth, his uncle, for the very first time. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film has Tirru cranking the camera and Vivek Harshan in charge of editing.

The rest of the technical crew includes Peter Hein for stunt choreography, Suresh Selvarajan for production designing, Kunal Rajan for sound design, Niharika Khan and Praveen Raja as costume designers, and Baba Bhaskar and Sheriff for dance choreography.

This multi-starrer is being released in three languages – Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The film’s star cast includes Simran, Trisha, Bobby Simha, Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sasikumar and Samuthirakani. The film was recently certified UA by CBFC.
