The trailer of Fahadh Faasil-Sai Pallavi’s upcoming film Athiran was released on Monday. The teaser, which came out last week, was terrifying and the trailer gives us more clues about the storyline of the film.

As the teaser suggested, Fahadh plays a mental health professional in the film while there seem to be supernatural overtones to Sai Pallavi’s character.

The trailer shows Sai Pallavi training in kalari, a martial art form, hinting that this will be the flashback portion that reveals what happens to her character. Fahadh seems to be the rebellious doctor who challenges the senior doctor character played by Atul Kulkarni, who was last seen in Malayalam cinema in Anjali Menon’s Koode.

From the trailer, we understand that the hospital is located in a remote area and houses patients with mental illnesses. In the teaser, Fahadh’s voice-over could be heard saying “autism is a developmental disorder” and that there was no reason to imprison someone for it. The trailer says that the hospital is one with secrets and shows a few other characters too, including actor Surabhi. Others in the cast include Sudev, Renji Panicker and Shanthi Krishna. Hopefully, the film will treat mental health issues sensitively.

Athiran is due for release on April 12, in time for Vishu. This will mark Sai Pallavi’s third film in Malayalam. Fahadh’s last Malayalam film was the critically acclaimed Kumbalangi Nights.
