The official teaser of Game Over, an upcoming Tamil-Telugu bilingual starring Taapsee Pannu and directed by Ashwin Saravanan, was released on Wednesday.

Written by Ashwin Saravanan and Kaavya Ramkumar, the film has been jointly produced by S Sashikanth of Y Not Studios and Chakravarthy Ramachandra of Reliance Entertainment. The teaser is a gripping 1.25-minute video with just Taapsee in most of its frames.

We see action figures, a vintage-looking play station, Pac-Man on a computer screen… enough to tell us that Taapsee will play a game addict and a game developer in the film.

The pace of the teaser increases when the following words flash on the screen: “We all have two lives. The second one starts when we realise we have only one.” And then it starts getting breathless with the sound of frequent knocks on the door getting louder. Then we see Taapsee on a wheelchair, both her legs injured and wearing a neck brace.

A sense of panic sets in and all of it is achieved with just the sound and Taapsee in the frame, trying to get away from a mysterious presence. Is she caught in one of her games or is she being stalked? We’ll have to wait to know more. The teaser ends with a game console on fire, literally. If that does not scream “game over!” we don’t know what does.

If the film is as exciting as its trailer, it could be one of the most interesting thrillers in Tamil in recent times. Game Over will release on June 14.

Recently, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has films such as Dev D, Black Friday and Gangs of Wasseypur to his credit, came on board to present the Hindi dubbed version of Game Over. The film’s director, Ashwin Saravanan, has previously directed Nayanthara’s Maya and also Iravaakaalam starring SJ Suryah and Wamiqa Gabbi.

The film, which will have music by Ron Yohann, will be Taapsee’s first Tamil film in four years after Kanchana 2 and Vai Raja Vai in 2015.
