The News Minute | November 1, 2014 | 6.36 pm ISKannada activists stopped the screening of non-Kannada films in three multiplexes in Bangalore on Saturday, after allegedly intimidating movie-goers.The Praveen Shetty faction of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike allegedly barged into PVR Cinemas in Orion Mall in Rajajinagar, Sigma Mall on Cunningham Road and Garuda Mall on Magrath Road and stopped the screening of non-Kannada films. The activists reportedly stopped the screening of the Hindi film Happy New Year in PVR Cinemas, and Tamil film Katthi at the theatre in Sigma Mall. It is unclear if the cinema halls screened any other films after that or if only Kannada films were screened. One Reddit user who was watching Gone Girl in PVR Cinemas in Orion Mall said that they felt intimidated by the activists who turned up. The user shared his/her experience on Reddit and said, "Kannada activists literally stormed PVR inside Orion mall and forced all people watching non Kannada movies out of the theatre. This is because of Kannada Rajyotsava. I was watching 'Gone Girl'. It was really terrifying. They warned to beat us up if we didn't leave the halls. I am a Kannadiga myself and I am ashamed of this man."He adds that police were present and "thanks to them I think there was no violence. But threatening "horata" (struggle) if audience didn't get out of the halls was very shameful. There were lots of non-Kannadigas who were utterly distraught and confused about what was happening."The user says the theatre refunded the ticket amount, but that could not be confirmed at the time of writing. PVR Cinemas could not be contacted.State Secretary of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Nagesh told The News Minute that they had gone to the three malls. “We want all theatres to screen Kannada films for the month of November. We symbolically protested today.”When asked about multiplexes screening films of all languages, he said: “No we will try to persuade them to screen Kannada films for the whole month, but at least on Rajyotsava Day at least there should be only Kannada films.”(The language used by the Reddit user in his/ her comments have been edited.)
