Karnataka Floods: Holiday for schools, colleges in Udupi, Shivamogga and Kodagu in Karnataka

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Friday after earlier denying the same.

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in the district on Friday. 

This comes after the district administration issued a clarification in the evening stating that classes will resume on Friday. However, in a late change, the district administration issued a second notice stating that Friday will be a holiday for schools and colleges in the district on account of rains. 

A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Udupi, Shivamogga and Kodagu districts in coastal and Malnad region of Karnataka on account of heavy rains. A holiday has also been declared in four taluks of Chikkamagaluru except Tarikere and Kadur, which are in the eastern part of the district. 

The MeT department is predicting heavy to very heavy rains in the three coastal districts of Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada on Friday.

61 relief centres have been opened in Uttara Kannada after heavy rains inundated several areas of the district, particularly in the Kali river basin. 21 relief centres have been opened in Kodagu after floods and landslides occurred in the southern part of the district in Virajpet taluk. Rescue efforts are underway in Kodagu to evacuate people living in vulnerable areas. 

Meanwhile, NDRF and Indian army teams are carrying out rescue and evacuation operations in Kodagu district after parts of Virajpet taluk was flooded.
