Following online uproar and a civil complaint of sedition being filed against her for stating that ‘Pakistan is not hell’, actor and Congress leader Ramya has said she will not apologise.
Speaking to The News Minute on Tuesday, Ramya said, "It's not that I have an ego or something. I have no problem apologising if I have made a mistake. But there is nothing wrong in what I said."
Ramya has been criticised for her comments that Pakistan for not "hell" as Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar had earlier said. She tweeted that she had been there for the SAARC Young Parliamentarians Conference recently and that people in Pakistan were just "like us".
A Kodagu-based advocate has filed a private complaint with a local court. An FIR has not been filed yet. Ramya said she would take action after she got a copy of the complaint based on her lawyer's advice.
Ramya said that the current atmosphere was vitiated and that there was an element of fear. "But this atmosphere is being created by both the media as well as politicians. If you look at the Kannada channels, they are using terms such as 'pro-Pakistan' and 'Ramya who batted for Pakistan'. They are just adding fuel to the fire."
Reacting to the BJP dubbing her 'anti-national' for praising Pakistan, she sarcastically tweeted a report about RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat saying ‘Pak is our ‘brother’ government must work to improve ties’. Read here.
Many on social media had also opposed her statement during an event in Mandya recently. BJP activists also held a protest in Mandya on Sunday following her statement. According to Kannada news channel Public TV, Ramya had said, “…Minister Manohar Parrikar said that ‘Going to Pakistan is like going to hell’. It is nothing like that. People there are just like us and there is no difference. They treated us very well…”
