Thousands in relief centres in Kodagu’s Madikeri, here’s how you can help them

While relief has reached some centres in Kodagu, more supplies and financial aid will be required in the coming days.

Heavy rains and landslides caused by the downpour have taken six lives in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, which is one of the districts worst hit by the south-west monsoon rains since June first week.

The rains, which had receded last week, have begun again in Kodagu’s Madikeri.

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the district received a maximum rainfall of up to 25.3 cm and an average rainfall of 11.9 cm over Thursday and Friday.

Thousands of people are living in a total 42 relief camps in Kodagu and many more are being rescued. While supplies have been sent to the relief camps and currently most have enough supplies, more will be required over the next few days.

Donations for flood relief can be made by cheque or DD drawn in favour of Chief Minister's Calamity Relief Fund, Room No 235, Second floor, Vidhana Soudha, Bangalore 560001. You can also make an online donation to the Chief Minister's Calamity Relief Fund.

The BBMP is also accepting donations and relief at their head office located at Dr Rajkumar Glass House and at respective ward offices or sub-divisional offices between 9 am and 5 pm.

"We have food and medical supplies that have come in today. We need warm clothes and sweaters for children and adults,” Sunil Aravindan, a coordinator of a relief camp in Madapura. Sunil can be contacted at +91 9886630463.

The Lions Club of Mercara is also accepting funds and will be sending it to relief centres in Kodagu.

Basic necessities are also required at Maithrayee Hall Relief Camp in Madikeri: 200 slippers, groceries, vegetables, oil, water, blankets, mops and steel plates. Contact Sanswamy at +91 8277303648. Coordinators at the relief camp state that currently they have enough supplies, but more will be needed in the coming two to three days.

Rotary Hall Collection and Distribution Centre, Madikeri is also accepting aid. They, however, have requested relief for the next two days: Footwear, nightgowns for women, innerwear and oil groceries in two days. The groceries should be in the form of non-perishable items.

Three relief camps put up in Suntikoppa have relief material coming in but require need 800 medium sized slippers and around 50-100 small sized slippers. Contact: +91 9886191888, 8453000888.

A relief camp near the Zilla Panchayat office in Madikeri needs slippers, medicines for BP and sugar tablets and warm clothes. Contact Arun on +91 9448721542.

Napoklu Junior College relief camp needs oil, groceries, rice, clothes, torch, slippers, sweaters, jerkins, mats, blankets and water. The coordinators have stated that any help is appreciated since no material has arrived so far. Contact Napoklu GP President Ismail at +91 9742698597.

On Friday, 162 people were rescued from Mukkodlu after the Dogra regiment approached the hill via Iggodlu estate. 74 more people were rescued from Hattihole and Mukkodlu from the other side of the village. Around 30-40 people, who were at Valley Dew Homestay were unable to be rescued as landslides occurred during the operations.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday took stock of the situation after visiting Mysuru and Kodagu and promised quick relief to all those who were stranded.

"Rains have been causing massive damage in Kodagu. The state officials, along with Indian Army troops, Navy divers are carrying out rescue and relief operations on a war-footing," Kumaraswamy told reporters here. He also added that they hope to rescue those stranded by Saturday, or latest by Sunday.
