23 booked in Kasaragod for celebrating Pakistan’s victory in ICC Champions Trophy

Following Pakistan’s victory against India in the ICC Champions Trophy final in London, 23 people were booked in Kasaragod district on Tuesday for celebrating the team’s win.

The case was registered by Badiyadukka police based on a complaint filed by BJP Kumbadaje panchayat committee president Rajesh Shetty.

Shetty alleged in his complaint that the accused shouted pro-Pakistan slogans and burst firecrackers on Sunday night after the team beat India by 180 runs.

Police said no arrests have been made yet, but prima facie there are evidences to proceed against them.

The case has been registered under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of the Indian Penal Code.

As per information from the police, the youngsters held a victory march at around 11 pm. However, police are yet to confirm whether they raised anti-India slogans.

No sedition charges have been slapped against the accused.

Similarly, three youths who celebrated Pakistan’s victory were booked from Kodagu district of Karnataka, which is close to Kasaragod. It was also based on a BJP leader’s complaint.

Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh as well, three youths were arrested on Sunday for the same reason.

Iliyas, Mehboob and Salman (the latter two brothers) were arrested by the Khachrod police from Khamaria village on Monday, for raising religious slogans and bursting firecrackers on Sunday night celebrating Pakistan’s win.

They were booked under Section 153A (b) of the Indian Penal Code (promoting communal disharmony and disturbing public peace).
