The question of allowing non-Hindus to enter temples in Kerala is getting support from many quarters after the Guruvayur temple Thanthri, Chennas Dinesan Namboothiripad spoke in favour of the move.
Actor and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Suresh Gopi speaking to media at Guruvayur has welcomed the move to allow non-Hindu believers into temples in Kerala. Suresh Gopi told media that it is the need of the hour to allow non-Hindus, who are also believers in temples without hurting anyone’s religious sentiments.
“Non-Hindus, who are believers, should be allowed to enter temples. This is welcoming and positive thought. We will have to execute this without hurting anyone’s religious sentiments”, he told media.
The actor also urged the state government to look into the issue as the Zamorin of Kozhikode has spoken for the move.
Kozhikode Zamorin had also said on Wednesday that non-Hindus should be allowed to enter Guruvayur temple. He also told that singers like Yesudas who follow Hinduism should not be bared entry in Guruvayur temple.
“In my opinion anybody who believes in Hinduism should be allowed to visit temples, but they should be ready to follow the rules and regulations put forward by the temple authorities”, said the Zamorin.
“I don’t have a second thought when it comes to Yesudas. He believes in Hinduism and his lifestyle speaks of it. Singers like him should not be kept away from Guruvayur”, added the Zamorin.
Yesudas who was denied entry into Guruvayur many times was granted permission in September by the Padmnabhaswamy temple panel, after the singer submitted a request stating that he believes in Hindu faith and is keen to have a darshan.
Earlier this month, Travancore Devaswom Board member Ajay Tharayil had demanded that non-Hindus should be allowed to enter temples under the board’s control. His statement had triggered wide spread public debate in Kerala.
Guruvayur Thanthi, Dinesan Namboothiripad had said this week, "There should be an open discussion among all the stakeholders regarding the topic. From that discussion, we need to arrive at how we will allow entry to non-Hindus, what is to be done, and other related issues. Only the government can take such a decision, they should do so."
Following this, other members from the Thanthri family had issued a press release stating that they were not of the same view.
