An inmate who escaped from the Open Jail at Nettukaltheri in Thiruvananthapuram on April 8 returned to the jail after three days, as he was hungry and did not get anything to eat. Thirty-six-year-old Abdul Razaq, a native of West Bengal, had escaped from the jail last week on Saturday night and returned on Tuesday midnight.

“He was very tired when he returned and asked us for food at first. He told us he was hiding somewhere inside bushes outside the jail. But he might have roamed around somewhere,” Samson, Superintendent of Open Jail at Nettukaltheri told The News Minute.

On Tuesday, jail wardens had seized a mobile phone from Razaq and they had taken the complaint regarding it. “He told us he was scared that we would send him to central prison as mobile phone was seized from him. That day we found him standing outside, and when asked, he said he went there to pluck mangoes. Suddenly he disappeared. We ran an intense search for him,” the officer said.

Wardens had seized mobile phones from three inmates including Razaq, and they were asked to sit at the superintendent’s room the whole day as a punishment.

According to the officer, Razaq, also called as Mintu, was caught in a theft case and was shifted to Open Jail, and was a calm, obedient inmate. Now he is in Sub Jail as a case against him has been filed with charges for the escape.

“Since he escaped, we had to file case with the police. He might have run away out of fear and had returned, but have to take actions as per procedures,” the officer said.
