Kochi, the south Indian city known for its coastal beauty, multiculturalism and an ethos that blends modernity with tradition, while harkening back to an old-world colonial spirit, has been chosen by international travel guide Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 destinations for 2020.

Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2020” list features cities from across the world. Aside from Kochi, the other cities include Salzburg (Austria), Washington DC (USA), Cairo (Egypt), Galway (Ireland), Bonn (Germany), La Paz (Bolivia), Vancouver (Canada), Dubai (UAE) and Denver (USA).

Situated on the southerwestern coast of India, Kochi is a major port city and for centuries, it was once a key strategic point in the spice trade. Called the “Queen of the Arabian Sea,” the city is made of up several regions, which includes Fort Kochi, known for St. Francis Church, the Jewish synagogues and the massive cantilevered Chinese fishing nets that dot the coast.

The cruises of the Cochin backwaters have become a popular, yet serene way to experience the state.

But it’s not just physical beauty that gives the city its charm. Kerala is one of the most religiously-diverse states in the country, and Kochi reflects that in its culture and cuisine.

In its description, Lonely Planet called Kochi a “nicely chilled city.”

Lonely Planet also touted Kochi’s adherence to renewable energy practices after the city launched the world’s first fully solar-powered airport.

“With boho cafes, intimate homestays hidden away in lazy, colonial-era backstreets, and a raft of forward-thinking galleries, this city keeps a tight grip on its heritage while wholeheartedly embracing its newfound cool,” the guide said.

Next year, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is returning to take over Fort Kochi. It is India’s largest art exhibition and the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia.
