In a freak accident, a contract labourer of Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) Limited’s plant was crushed to death after he got jammed between a forklift and a container. (forklift is a machine used to lift and move materials).

Fifty three year old AR Sajeev, resident of Eloor in Ernakulam district, was a contract labourer of FACT’s Udyogamandal division.

The accident happened on Tuesday morning at around 10.30 am when work was going on to dispose off scrap materials from the plant. As per FACT officials, the accident happened as the fork lift which was in use lost balance and crushed the deceased worker between the machine and the walls of a container.

“The fork lift was under operation and the incident happened when suddenly its break failed. Sajeevan was standing in the vicinity and he was jammed between the forklift's engine and a container,” a FACT official told TNM.

“Though he was shifted at once to St Joseph's Hospital in Manjummel, he was dead when he was brought there,” said an official of Eloor police station.

According to officials of FACT, such accidents have not happened in the past. “The operator who handled the fork lift was also an experienced person. No accidents have happened in FACT in the recent past and this is such an unfortunate incident,” said the official.

Eloor police told TNM that no case has been registered.
