The residents of Kollam district can now be thankful that their daily milk supply is not adding to the plastic waste in the district.

In order to do away with the use of plastic, the Kollam unit of Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (Milma) has started a mobile vending machine to supply milk.

The initiative, that has already begun on an experimental basis in parts of the district, replaces the method of supplying milk in plastic packets.

Customers can now collect milk in their own containers, from a point where the mobile milk vending machine will be stationed. 

Milma Kollam unit manager Sreenivasan told The Times of India that the initiative has garnered positive response from the customers. Over and above addressing environmental concerns, the initiative will also prove beneficial to the customers, as they have to shell out Rs. 1 less per packet.

“We have rolled out the scheme on a pilot basis to replace packaged milk that comes in plastic packets. Based on the consumer response so far, we are hopeful that it would be a success and we would be able to extend it to more places,” Sreenivasan was quoted as saying.
