A team of Mumbai police has been sent to Kerala to investigate the rape charges against Binoy Kodiyeri, the son of CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The team reached Kerala on Wednesday, Mumbai’s DCP (Operations) Manjunath Shinge confirmed to TNM. Binoy has been accused of rape by a Mumbai-based woman, who in her complaint to the police had said that he had sexually harassed her for years after luring her with the promise that he would marry her.

On June 13, Mumbai’s Oshiwara police had filed an FIR against Binoy under Sections 376 (rape) and Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code. The complainant is a native of Bihar and reportedly a staff at a dance bar in Mumbai.

In her complaint, the woman has alleged that Binoy had rented a house for her and used to take care of all her expenses after promising to marry her. She stated in her complaint that she has an eight-month-old son from the relationship and that she did not know Binoy was already married.

Binoy Kodiyeri, however, has denied the allegations against him and has called it an attempt to blackmail him. According to reports, the Kannur police had received a complaint from Kodiyeri in the month of April but probe into it was delayed due to the Lok Sabha Elections.

Speaking to Asianet news, Binoy had claimed that he had filed a complaint with Kannur Range IG stating that he received a notice from the woman claiming that he had married her and demanded Rs 5 crore from him.

Binoy Kodiyeri was in the news in January 2018 as well, when he was booked in a Rs 13 crore money laundering case in Dubai. Later, Binoy received a certificate from the Dubai police which said that no case had been registered against him.
