Red alert in 3 districts of Kerala: Heavy rains expected, travel warning issued

A red alert warning has been issued to three districts in Kerala for October 7th. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Thrissur, Palakkad and Idukki are likely to see very heavy rains and strong winds on October 7 and therefore red alerts have been issued in these districts.

By October 5th, heavy rains are expected across the state of Kerala. In most districts in Kerala, a yellow alert has also been issued from October 5th to 7th. Some districts and isolated areas are likely to see heavy rains on October 4. Orange alert has been issues in Idukki from 4th to 6th, Thrissur and Palakkad on the 6th and Pathanamthitta on the 7th.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan speaking at a press meet on October 3rd also said that a low pressure area is very likely to form over southeast Arabian Sea on 5th October. It is likely to concentrate into a depression and move northwestwards in the subsequent 48 hours. It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm thereafter.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into southeast and central Arabian Sea from 4th October onwards. Fishermen at deep sea areas of southeast and central Arabian Sea have been advised to return to the coast before 5th October.

The CM advised against travelling to hilly areas between the mentioned dates, and particularly against travelling Munnar to explore nilakurinji at this time.

The CM said that there was a likelihood of very strong winds and landslides that could result in accidents. He also said that he would request the Central Government to send 5 more teams of the NDRF to Kerala. The police would issue warnings in flood-prone areas through loudspeakers.

CM also said that a state executive meeting of the Disaster Management Authority would meet to study the water level in dams and take appropriate actions.

The CM said that houses that were destroyed during floods are not yet habitable. The CM said that relief camps were being constructed by October 5, and that existing relief camps could also be used. The CM assured that required supplies and necessities would be arranged for.
