Why a photographer was attacked for clicking a picture of Oommen Chandy

Written by : TNM

It’s a high voltage by-election that Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has openly referred to as a vote for his government’s rule for the past four years. A victory in Aruvikkara would be a vote for development according to Chandy and a big pothole on the road cannot feature in that.So when a photographer clicked a picture of the jeep in which the CM was travelling with the young UDF candidate Sabarinadhan, navigating around a large pothole, it irked supporters.Peethambaran Payyeri, Chief Photographer of Deccan Chronicle was trying to take more pictures of  the campaign motorcade of the CM in the backdrop of the pothole, when party workers accompanying the road show attacked him. This is the picture clicked by Payyeri“I was waiting on the roadside to click the photo of the pothole and CM’s vehicle. Some party workers who were on motor bikes asked me to move from there and put down the camera. But I did not move. I waited there and then they shouted at me and tried to move me forcefully. They tried to forcibly push me aside. When they were about to beat me, journalists from other media houses rushed there and they left,” Payyeri said.Photograph by Kerala KaumudiWhat has irked journalists in Kerala is also the fact that none of the Congress leaders including the Chief Minister intervened. Aruvikkara constituency has been a Congress stronghold for more than two decades. G Karthikeyan has won the seat continuously since 1991. (It was Aryanad before delimitation in 2011)
