Is superstar Mohanlal who has lately taken a stand on many sensitive issues going to take the political plunge? Readers were in for a surprise as Malayala Manorama reported that the actor was likely to contest the 2016 assembly polls. Though the article said it was according to ‘unconfirmed reports’, it went on to say that the actor may contest from Changanassery constituency on a Congress ticket with the support of the Nair Service Society (NSS).

The NSS however has flatly denied such a possibility.

"It is a false propaganda. The NSS has no relation to politics. We are an independent, social organisation. It is better to ask the person who reported it, he might know about it better than us. We have no plans to enter politics," P.N.Narendranathan Nair, President of NSS told The News Minute. The actor has not reacted to the speculation yet.

What makes the Manorama article interesting is not just the speculation around Mohanlal, but also the hint that NSS will rally with the Congress. The BJP and SNDP have been trying to rope in NSS as part of the ‘broad Hindu alliance’ plan in the state.

Though actors like Mohanlal have taken stands on political issues, most of them have stayed away from active politics.

In the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu that also goes to the polls in 2016, every election witnesses intense speculation on whether actor Rajinikanth will join politics. Though many parties have wooed him, Rajinikanth has refused to contest.

Manorama also reported that actor Suresh Gopi, who has never been secretive about his admiration for the BJP and Narendra Modi, will most likely contest from the Vattiyoorkavu constituency in Thiruvananthapuram on a BJP ticket.
