The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a show-cause notice to controversial preacher Zakir Naik's NGO Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), official sources said on Tuesday.

The ministry, by doing so on Monday, has initiated the process for the cancellation of IRF's Foreign Contribution Regulations Act registration, they said.

According to a ministry note, Naik allegedly made many provocative speeches and engaged in terror propaganda in the past.

The Islamic orator is banned in many countries, including the UK and Canada, for his speeches allegedly aimed against other religions.

Naik, who is believed to be in Malaysia, stayed away from attending the funeral of his father recently, over fears of getting arrested upon arrival in India. His father passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Sunday.
