Olympian Mohammed Shahid on Wednesday passed away after battling kidney and liver problems at a Gurgaon hospital at the age of 56.

Earlier this month, the legend was admitted to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon, after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse.

Here are some interesting tidbits about him:

Born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on April 14, 1960, he made his international debut in 1979 at the age of 19 against France at the Junior World Cup.

He was part of the gold-medal winning team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he played under the captaincy of V Bhaskaran.

Shahid captained India during the 1985-86 season. He was known for his exquisite dribbling skills and formed a great pair with Zafar Iqbal.

He was part of the silver-medal winning team at the Delhi Asian Games of 1982 and won bronze in 1986 Seoul Asiad.

The Arjuna Award was bestowed on him in 1981 and he also received the Padma Shri in 1986.
