Indians spend more time in daily office commute than most countries in the world, with more than 2 hours on the road every day, as per a report by office commute platform MoveInSync Technology Solutions. The report titled ‘Travel Time Report Q1 2019 vs Q1 2108’ states that an average Indian spends 7% of their day in commuting to office averaging less than 3 minutes per kilometre.

The report is based on the data collated from the rides on MoveInSync platform across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Delhi-NCR.

The average travel speed across 6 cities indicates that India’s IT corridor takes 2 minutes and 26 seconds to cover a distance of 1km.

City wise, the report found that office commuters in Chennai travelled the fastest with a speed of 25.7 km/hr, while Bengaluru and Mumbai travelled the slowest with an average speed of 18.7 and 18.5 km/hr. Hyderabad and Delhi-NCR travelled at 21.2 and 20.6 km/hr respectively.

However, compared to the first quarter of 2018, in Q1 of 2019, there was a decrease in the average one-way distance travelled by an office commuter in Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Pune. Chennai saw an increase of 12% in the average one-way distance travelled with a corresponding 8% increase in average commute time.

While Bengaluru saw a 3% drop in average one-way commute time, but it is not proportionate to the drop of 12% in average one-way distanced travelled. Hyderabad saw an increase of 9% in average one-way commute time.

Time and day

Monday blues seem to hit traffic too, as it was found to be the worst day of the week in all six cities to travel to work with the highest average one-way commute time.

In Bengaluru, office goers reached office fastest on Tuesday, while Chennai and Hyderabad got to work the fastest on Friday.

With 9am being the worst time to commute to work and 6-7pm back home, the report states that by altering or introducing flexi-work timing, a company’s employee has the potential of reducing the travel time by 20% to 40% or 25-50 minutes a day.
