Independent journalist and filmmaker Revati Laul was allegedly assaulted on Wednesday evening in Ahmedabad by a man convicted in the Naroda Patiya massacre case.

Laul was in the Naroda area of the city to meet Suresh Chhara, who was out on parole. She wanted to interview him for a book she is writing on the Naroda Patiya massacre and was at his house.

“I visited him at his house and I politely asked him if he wanted to share information about himself, his past, family and he, without provocation, started slapping me. He kept on punching me and banged my head to the wall. I somehow managed to flee from the spot,” Laul told NDTV.

She says that she managed to escape after Chhara’s son and some neighbours intervened. She sought medical treatment at a government hospital before going to the Vejalpur police station.

On Thursday, Laul told The News Minute that she was on her way to meet the Ahmedabad police Commissioner. She has been living in Ahmedabad for around a year to research her book, NDTV reported.

Chhara was sentenced to 31 years in prison for his involvement in the Naroda Patiya massacre in which 97 people were killed. He has served around three years until now, The Indian Express reported.

Chhara alias Richard alias Langdo was released on temporary bail by the Gujarat High Court, so that he could look for his missing daughter. Chhara’s name according to court records is Suresh Didalwala.

A month ago, his wife, a Muslim, had lodged a complaint in November 2015, accusing him of sodomy and marital rape when he was out on bail six months before that. She also applied for divorce with a family court, which will hear her petition on January 22. The couple have been married for 20 years.
