Written by : TNM

The News Minute | April 6, 2015 | 4:25 am ISTTen years after his death, PV Narasimha Rao seems to be finally getting his due recognition not from his home party Congress but from its rival, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).The current Modi-led government has decided to build a memorial to honour him as the architect of the country’s economic reforms.Rao’s daughter S. Vani Devi speaking to The New Indian Express about her father’s cremation said: “Even (then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister) YSR had promised to do a lot of things in my father’s memory but never did anything… Even today, it’s the NDA government-led by Modi which has decided to honour him. They have no connection with my father and they need not do it but it shows they have respect for what my father had done.”His family expressed displeasure with the funeral service being held in Hyderabad instead of New Delhi in 2004. Rao is also the only former Prime Minister who does not have a memorial in the capital.Rao’s tenure was marked by political turbulence with the rise of BJP and the demolition of Babri Masjid. He is also known fondly as Chanakya for his ability to steer through parliament using strong economic and political legislations, even while heading a minority government.
