Taking on the Nehru-Gandhi family yet again, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy today alleged that Rahul Gandhi had declared himself to be a British national with a UK address to the British authorities at least till 2009, thereby in violation of Indian law.
At the press conference in New Delhi, Swamy released Memorandum of Association documents of a company called ‘Backops Limited’, a general commercial company registered in the UK.
Swamy had released the certificate of incorporation of the company, details of shareholders, the annual returns which were filed and the dissolution documents of the company.
According to the documents, the company was dissolved in February 17, 2009. In one of the annual returns of the company, under the head “Details of the Officers of the Company”, one ‘Rahul Gandhi’ is listed as a company director born on June 19, 1970 and a British national. Rahul Gandhi’s date of birth according to his Lok Sabha profile is the same.
In a letter to PM Modi, to which he attached the above documents, he urged Modi to treat this matter with ‘great urgency’ and immediately take necessary steps to see if this prima facie evidence is rebuttable, and if not, order that Gandhi be stripped off his citizenship and Lok Sobha membership.
Earlier in 2012, Swamy had said that Rahul Gandhi had misappropriated funds through a firm called Backops Services Pvt. Ltd. which was set up in 2002, “with main objective of providing back office and advisory support services to clients”, but it filed its accounts with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) only on March 2007.
“This is sheer violation of the Companies Act. Moreover, till 2009, the company was accepting money from abroad without seeking any permission from the RBI, which is another violation. In 2005, the company stated that it had received Rs 41 lakh as foreign exchange,” he had then said.
Reacting to his ‘expose’ today, Congress leader Ajay Maken said today at the official AICC briefing, "It has been the habit of Subramanian Swamy to make silly statements in order to try and seek some publicity whenever he is sidelined. Nobody takes his statements seriously".
