Vizag is third, Mysuru drops to fifth and Chennai is 235th among India's Swachh cities

Tirupati is ranked ninth while Coimbatore stands as 16.

The latest Swachh Bharat rankings reveal that two out of the five cleanest cities in India are from the South –  Vishakhapatnam  ranked third and Mysuru ranked fifth. Madhya Pradesh's Indore tops the list, followed by its capital Bhopal. Gujarat’s Surat stands fourth in the list of the cleanest city in India.

Mysuru which was the cleanest for two consecutive years has slipped to the fifth spot, while Vishakhapatnam which occupied the fifth spot last year has climbed up to the third position.

Tiruchirapalli, which was the third cleanest city in the country dropped to the sixth spot. The only other south Indian city occupying a top 10 spot is Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati.

Capital New Delhi comes seventh in the rankings, and cities in Uttar Pradesh fare the worst. 25 cities of the state find themselves at the bottom of the list.

Gujarat (12), Madhya Pradesh (11) and Andhra Pradesh (8) were the states with most number of clean cities.

Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu said that the rankings were based on the Swachh Survekshan conducted in 434 cities, involving 37 lakh citizens.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the flagship Swachh Bharat Mission after coming to power in 2014, as promised in the poll manifesto. The scheme aims at making the country clean and open-defecation free, by 2019.
