The Chennai police have arrested four men for attacking a policeman on duty, after a video of the incident went viral.
The video shows four men beating a police constable in uniform in the middle of a road, as vehicles pass by. Heavy blows are rained on the policeman as he frantically tries to block them to save himself from bruises. While one of the four men moved away only to return and beat the policeman, another man walks towards the camera and pushes it down.
The incident reportedly happened on June 13 night on Kodambakkam High road. Karthikeyan, a police constable, was on duty in that stretch when he noticed four men were drunk and allegedly trying to heckle some people on the roadside. As Karthikeyan allegedly instructed the men to move away, the men claimed to be lawyers and attacked Karthikeyan. At first, he tried to block the blows, but then the attack allegedly became stronger. At one point, the men also snatched the walkie-talkie from Karthikeyan and broke it. That is when Karthikeyan allegedly called other policemen through his mobile to come to his rescue. The accused have been identified as Sulaiman (33) and Mohammed Riswan (34) from Ezhukinaru, Afsar Husain (35) from Royapuram and Mohammed Ali (32) from Pavakkara street.
Speaking to TNM, a constable at the Pondy Bazaar police station where Karthikeyan works confirmed the incident. “The four men have been remanded to judicial custody. The accused men were all drunk and started attacking Karthikeyan that night,” the constable said. Refusing to divulge further details about the remand the constable directed TNM to contact the inspector of police at Pondy Bazaar station.
Multiple attempts by TNM to reach the Inspector of police, Pondy Bazaar, did not succeed.
