Tamil Nadu polls 2016 has been a major upset for the DMK, which seems to have notched up a good number of seats though it could not form the government. The results have also been very upsetting for the top leaders of several other parties, including some who were considered a sure winners.
Here are the star-losers of Tamil Nadu
Vijayakant
Counting day crashed the Captain’s ship, taking with it, even his electoral deposit. He lost by a margin of around 37,000 votes.
Sarathkumar
The actor-turned-politician appears to be jinxed. He lost the assembly polls which he contested on an AIADMK ticket by 16,000 votes. This, after he suffered a defeat in the Nadigar Sangam elections.
Thrirumavalavan
VCK leader Thrirumavalavan fought a neck-and-neck battle but lost by a margin of just 87 votes.
Anbumani Ramadoss
The PMK leader lost by 20,000 votes, making it somewhat embarrassing that he was his party's chief ministerial candidate.
Tamilisai Soundararajan
The BJP’s state chief did not fare as well as her counterpart did in Kerala. She could only come third, with the winning candidate beating her by 45,000 votes in Virugambakkam.
Seeman
NTK leader Senthamizhan Seeman finished fifth and lost by 58,000 votes and forfeited his deposit too.
Now we come to the losers who did not even contest the elections
Vaiko
After making tall claims of running a robust campaign and making PWF win, Vaiko opted out of the elections in April.
GK Vasan
Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) chief G K Vasan quit the Congress in November 2014 along with his supporters to revive TMC. However, his name did not figure in the list of candidates released by his party.
EVKS Elangovan
The Tamil Nadu Congress chief very humbly declared early on that he would not contest the polls but would campaign for other candidates.
G Ramakrishnan
The CPI(M) leader announced that he would not contest in the elections as it was a unanimous party decision.
R Nallakannu
On his decision not to contest, the veteran leader had said "We have decided to give more opportunity to the youngsters. So, we seniors have decided not to contest in the election and support the youngsters of the future generation.”
