The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday said it would file a review petition against the recent Supreme Court decision on alignment of GAIL pipeline in the state.

The announcement came after CM J Jayalalithaa held a meeting with the officials at the Secretariat on Thursday.  She also advised the officials regarding what points need to be highlighted in the SC case.

Finance Minister O Panneerselvam and other ministers, Chief Secretary K Gnanadesikan and other higher officials were present at the meeting.

This comes after the SC on Tuesday dismissed a plea by the Tamil Nadu government against GAIL's  Kochi-Mangalore liquefied natural gas pipeline and quashed the state government's notification that had sought its re-alignment.

The Rs 3,000 crore, 504-km passes through five districts of Tamil Nadu in which farmers say it affects thousands of acres of farmland.

But the apex court on Tuesday said that the state government, which has rallied behind the state's farmers, has no jurisdiction to seek re-alignment of the pipeline, which GAIL argued rests with the Centre. 

The SC, however, directed GAIL to pay enhanced compensation to farmers, and asked the state government to revise its computation of market value of lands affected by the pipeline.

GAIL argued that it had already invested Rs 600 crore in the project and had all necessary clearances and even a majority of farmers were on board with the plan.
