An arranged marriage turned into a high voltage drama in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, after a man tied a thaali (holy thread) to his brother’s bride moments before the ‘arranged marriage’ was about to be solemnised.

The marriage between Vijay* and a 20-year-old woman from Rajapalayam was fixed by their parents and was to happen on June 1 at Bala Murugan Temple at Illayampatti.

Minutes before Vijay was supposed to tie the thaali around the woman's neck, his younger brother, Raju*, pushed Vijay and tied another thaali to his brother’s bride, reported The New Indian Express.

Following this, the woman’s family had an argument with Raju and he was reportedly beaten up. But to everyone’s surprise, when the woman was asked to remove the thaali, she refused. TOI reported that she had been calm throughout the drama, to everyone's surprise.

The woman and Raju told their parents that they were in a relationship for the last few months.

They had met each other in Rajapalayam when Raju with his family had gone to meet the woman to arrange a marriage for his brother. The couple fell in love and had kept in touch over the phone. Both the brothers work in a garment firm. Raju, however, never confessed about his relationship to his brother. When the couple revealed that they had planned the act, Vijay came to know about the relationship threw away the thaali and left the marriage venue.

However, the woman’s family has refused to accept the marriage and removed the thaali that Raju had tied.

The woman’s family forcibly took her back to their house. But the woman refused to marry anyone else other than Raju.

Later, the woman’s family invited Raju to their house but he declined to accept their marriage saying that they had removed the thaali from the woman’s neck.

TNIE reported that Vijay’s whereabouts remain unknown.
