With the assembly elections just round the corner,  ruling AIADMK and opposition corporators in Coimbatore clashed with each other on Friday as the annual city budget was being tabled.

Following the commotion, six DMK  and two Congress corporators were arrested.

DMK corporators alleged that they were beaten up by AIADMK counterparts and pushed out of the office when they asked for justification for the losses.

Meena Loganathan, a DMK corporator said, “When DMK councillors asked for the justification for the losses they were beaten and pushed out of the building by their AIADMK counterparts.”

“In the budget they haven’t brought out any new initiatives for the people,’’ she added.

DMK councillors had objected to the budget which they allege was a mere continuation of the previous one and lacked people centric initiatives and a number of announcements made in the previous Budgets were yet to be implemented.

Despite multiple attempts, Corporation Commissioner and the Mayor could not be reached for a comment.
