A 16-year-old intermediate student in Hyderabad set herself on fire on Friday after allegedly being harassed by two auto drivers.

The incident took place in Alwal after Gowtami, who herself was the daughter of an auto driver, locked the kitchen and used kerosene to immolate herself.

According to reports, Gowtami's father, S Balraj, was a union leader and had recently chided two other drivers.

Following this, the accused reportedly were upset.

“Few days ago, Balaraju chided Vijay and Prakash for causing nuisance at the auto stand near Suchitra X Roads. The duo complained to the vehicle owner Narsing about the incident. According to the complainant, the accused bore a grudge against him after the incident and humiliated his daughter," Alwal inspector T Anand Reddy told the Times of India.

The Deccan Chronicle reported that after the initial incident, on Wednesday, the victim saw some auto drivers quarrelling yet again and informed her father about it. The drivers were reported to have learnt that she had tipped off her father and targeted her on Thursday

After complaining to her father on Thursday night, Gowtami took the extreme step on Friday morning.

The police have registered a case against the two auto drivers and the owner of the vehicle.
