Hyderabad municipal chief’s vehicle stacks up fines worth Rs 6,210 for overspeeding

An official note from the GHMC's office said that the fines were paid and the driver had been warned not to violate traffic rules again.

In a major embarrasment to Hyderabad's municipal chief, his car was found to have pending traffic challans worth Rs 6,210.

The photos of a white Fortuner car belowing to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner M Dana Kishore did the rounds on social media on Thursday evening. Most of the fines from the traffic police were for speeding and dangerous driving.

On learning about the incident, the IAS officer immediately paid off the fines. An official note from the GHMC's office said that the driver had been reprimanded, and warned not to violate traffic rules again.

According to the traffic police's echallan website, two violations tooks place near Chennama Hotel under the jursidction of the Rajendra Nagar traffic police, while two other violations took place under the Shamshabad traffic police's jurisdiction, near Harshaguda and Hamadula Nagar. The Vanasthali Puram Traffic Police also fined the vehicle for 'over speeding/dangerous driving' near the city's Outer Ring Road (ORR). One more fine was near Gachibowli junction.

While the base fine for overspeeding/dangerous driving is Rs 1,000, along with user charges, each fine comes up to Rs 1,035. The car of the GHMC Commissioner had six pending challans.

The incident was first brought to light by a Twitter user, Mohit, who said, "Speed thrills but kills. GHMC Commissioner's vehicle has pending violations of Rs 6210 (Vehicle no:TS09FA4248). All the violations are of overspeeding."

In February this year, an RTI querty revealed that traffic violators in Hyderabad owe the Hyderabad Traffic police as much as Rs, 62,94,18,750 in unpaid fines up till January 2019. The figures are much higher than Rs 62 crore if the unpaid traffic dues for the Rachakonda and Cyberabad commissionerates that form Hyderabad city are also factored in.
