An Air India passenger on board a flight from Hyderabad to Chicago was in for a shock, after he reportedly found a cockroach in his vegetarian meal.

Taking to Twitter, Rahul Raghuvanshi posted a photo of the meal and said "Air India now serves cockroach for vegetarian meals on AI127 #sicktomystomach #traumatized #cockroachinfood,"(sic).

The incident reportedly took place on November 15 and the airline has since issued an apology.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We have a zero tolerance policy in this aspect. Obligatory action is taking place. No amount will be paid for the caterer for the entire flight on the day of the incident. The gourmate provides catering service to Air India in the flight. We also imposed additional penalty of Rs 1 lakh on the gourmate for their negligence and had warned them," AI spokesperson Dhananjay was quoted as saying.

Last month, passengers on a Shanghai-Delhi-Mumbai Air India flight raised a hue after they were served non-vegetarian food.

Another incident occurred a few months ago in June when 90 passengers were served prawns in a vegetarian meal.
