The Delhi police on Saturday shifted YSRCP MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital after he fell ill during an ongoing indefinite hunger strike at AP Bhavan.

The senior MP, along with the four other colleagues, submitted their resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan earlier this week, and have been on a hunger strike demanding Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh.

Doctors noticed fluctuation in the 73-year-old's Blood Pressure (BP) level and suggested that he be shifted to the hospital.

According to reports, YSRC honourary president and wife of former Andhra CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy, YS Vijayalakshmi, visited Mekapati at the hospital.

On Saturday, CPM national secretary Sitaram Yechury expressed solidarity and sat on the stage with the YSRCP MPs for a little while.

“On the day the Bill to bifurcate the State came to Parliament, I asked about sharing of electricity, water and government employees. But there was no answer. [Then] I asked why it was taken up without proper homework,” Yechury told reporters.

The five MPs who resigned this week were YV Subbareddy, Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, YS Avinash Reddy, V Varaprasad Rao and PV Mithun Reddy.

All their resignation letters, which were submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, had only one line: "I hereby tender my resignation of my Lok Sabha seat in the House with immediate effect.”

The move came after Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned on Friday sine dine.

This comes after weeks of escalating tensions between the parties in Andhra Pradesh and the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre.

YSRCP chief Jaganmohan Reddy earlier demanded that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu should also ask TDP MPs in the Lok Sabha to resign.

Both the YSRCP and TDP, which pulled out of the NDA on March 16, moved no-confidence motions against the government over its refusal to accord Special Status to Andhra Pradesh as committed to it at the time of the state's bifurcation in 2014.

However, the same could not be taken up by the Lok Sabha Speaker due to the protests by the AIADMK members over the fact that the Cauvery Management Board has not yet been set-up as mandated by the Supreme Court.
