A police complaint has been filed against Cardinal Mar George Alencherry in relation to the case filed by a 44-year-old Catholic nun accusing a bishop of rape.

Asianet news reports that in a complaint filed to the Inspector General (IG) of Police of Ernakulam range by a Christian organisation, it was said that Mar George Alencherry tried to cover up the complaint given to him by the nun stating that she was raped by the bishop.

The complaint was filed by a native of Ernakulam, John Jacob, says the Asianet news report.

According the Asianet, Jacob has requested the police to take a case against Mar George Alencherry for not informing the police about the rape and for trying to cover up the incident.

A team of Kerala Police officials on Sunday recorded the statement of the nun who had alleged that she was repeatedly sexually abused by a bishop.

The police team, led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, recorded the statement at a convent at Kuravilangad near Kottayam.

The nun who is now posted in Kottayam district of Kerala, has accused Bishop Franco Mullakkal of Jalandhar diocese of sexually abusing her since 2014. According to her complaint to the Kottayam SP which was filed on Friday, the bishop had sexually abused her multiple times.

Vaikkom DySP, who is currently investigating the case, told TNM that the bishop has been booked under Section 376 of the IPC (punishment for rape).

The police also said that the bishop has filed a complaint with the SP, alleging that the nun has raised allegations against him, as a means of taking revenge.

The new case has come to light even as the Malankara Orthodox Church is mired in a similar controversy. The husband of a woman has accused five priests of various dioceses of sexually abusing his wife multiple times, after blackmailing her with her confessional secret. The Crime Branch is currently investigating the case.
