The News Minute| November 15, 2014| 6.30 pm ISTIndia may have many restrictions with the sale and consumption of beef but that doesn’t stop it from being the second largest exporters of beef, next to B. Most of the exported beef from the country is water buffalo meat which in many states is not illegal to slaughter for consumption under certain conditions.India exported 1850 metric tonnes of beef till October 2014, while the United States recorded a meager 1179 metric tonnes the same year according to the Livestock and Poultry: World markets and trade report submitted by the United States Department of Agriculture. The report also says that the total domestic consumption in India till October 2014 was 2250 metric tonnes, up from 2035 metric tonnes in 2013.. India is definitely a global competitor in producing export quality buffalo meat. The reports says total world beef and veal production for 2015 is forecast at 58.74 million tonnes, 1.4% lower than 2014. But India’s beef exports in 2015 are projected to go up to 1.95 million tonnes, up 5.4% year-on-year.In addition to that, India is now known for the growing demand for indigenous cattle as it has the ability to produce superior quality milk which the Modi-government is keen to build on, according to a report by the Hindu. Another reason for this rise in global demand which the article states is due to climatic changes experienced across the world because of which markets are seeking Indian bred cattle as they have high resistance to heat and have the ability to yield better irrespective of inadequate quantities of feed.India being one of the leading exporters of buffalo meat doesn't come as a surprise as many state governments have always favoured cows over buffaloes as the former is considered to be sacred, many states have enacted laws to prevent cow slaughter.
