In the latest incident of political violence in Kerala, a 36-year-old Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker was hacked to death in Tanur, Malappuram on Thursday night. The victim has been identified as M Ishaaq, a resident of Anchudi in Tanur.

The incident happened around 7:30 pm on Thursday near a mosque close to the deceased's residence in Tanur. Preliminary investigations have revealed that swords and knives were used in the attack. The party has accused 4 CPI(M) workers of attacking and murdering Ishaaq.

"We have registered a case against 4 workers of the CPI(M). We are still investigating other details in the case," an officer from the Tanur police station told TNM.

Ishaaq, is survived by his wife and children, brother and parents. According to reports, local leadership of the Muslim League has alleged that the attack took place without any provocation and that a police team which had been camping outside at the time, could not prevent the attack.

Although Ishaaq was rushed to hospital following the attack, he succumbed to his injuries. His post-mortem was done at the Kozhikode medical college hospital.

The IUML, which is the single largest ally of the Congress in the UDF, has called for a shutdown on Friday following the incident. The Malappuram district CPI(M) committee has denied any role in the attack, according to reports.
