“Don’t worry Pranay...U r not alone.. Not only me u are in the heart of crores of people.. Many people are fighting for justice (sic),” a post read on Facebook page named ‘Justice for Pranay’. Days after her husband’s brutal murder in a caste killing, 21-year-old Amrutha has taken to social media to demand justice. The page linked to Amrutha’s personal account has over 60,000 likes as of Tuesday.
Within a couple of hours of the post being uploaded, the page received overwhelming likes with many supporting the cause.
Speaking to the media, Amrutha said that she received numerous messages on Facebook expressing solidarity and condolences, after which she decided to initiate a social media campaign. Amrutha said that Pranay always opposed casteism and now she intends to end it through this campaign.
The page has shared numerous photos of protests and rallies carried out for Pranay across the state.
In the recommendations, where a user can express their opinion, several have demanded death penalty for Amrutha’s father, Maruthi Rao, for plotting Pranay’s murder.
One recommendation by a Facebook user, Shekhar Kummari reads, “The killings happen at many places when it is an inter-caste marriage. Pranay is the latest victim of casteist inhuman people. I demand the state that the killers of Pranay should get proper punishment.”
24-year-old Pranay, a Dalit from the Mala community was hacked to death on Friday in broad daylight by an unidentified assailant hired by Maruthi Rao, who had opposed their marriage.
The caste killing sparked wide outrage in Telangana and many vented their anger on social media against caste violence.
Speaking to TNM on Monday, Amrutha had vowed to fight for justice.
“We can uproot caste system only through inter-caste marriages and by encouraging such marriages. It should happen the way BR Ambedkar envisioned it and we must challenge the brutal and inhuman caste system,” Amruta told TNM.
"I will fight till the end to get justice for Pranay. He always said that caste differences among people should end and casteism should go. There should never be a situation where a person faces difficulties because of their caste. That is what I will fight for now," she had said.
