Senior IPS officer and ex-Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad chief Himanshu Roy on Friday reportedly shot himself with his service revolver.

He was declared brought dead to the hospital. According to reports, he shot himself at 1:40pm at his residence.

According to initial reports, he was suffering from cancer and was under heavy medication. Officers who knew him personally have expressed shock at his suicide and said that he had become reclusive after he was diagnosed with cancer.  

"He was a very bright officer. Such a tragedy," MN Singh, a former IPS officer was quoted by NDTV.

Reacting to the development former Maharashtra DGP PS Pasricha told India, “I used to speak to him every few months. In the past few months, he used to feel low due to his health.”

The 1988-batch Maharashtra cadre IPS officer was last serving as the ADG Establishment.

He was part of some of the most high profile cases in Maharashtra. He was heading the probe in the IPL spot fixing scandal, and  was part of the investigating team of 7/11 Mumbai train blasts, 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and journalist J Dey murder case.

He also made possible the arrest of Vindu Dara Singh for alleged links to bookies in the 2013 IPL spot fixing, the last of the high profile cases he was investigating.. 

He was the youngest SP of Nasik (Rural) in 1995. Between 2004 and 2007 he was the Commissioner of Police in Nasik and In 2009, he was made the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) of Mumbai.

After this stint, he was appointed to the ATS. He is also credited with setting up Mumbai’s Cyber Crime cell.
