Over the last 24 hours, Mumbai has seen the heaviest rains the city has experienced in over a decade. At least 16 people have died due to rain related calamities and among these, the collapse of a compound wall in East Malad has resulted in at least 12 casualties. A red alert has been issued as more rains are predicted in the city and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked residents to not step out of their houses unless absolutely necessary.
Several stations have been inundated and the airport has also been flooded. A public holiday has been declared by the government.
