The upcoming Malayalam film Thottappan has Vinayakan in two different get-ups. Directed by Shanavas K Bavakutty, the film will have the actor playing a youngster and an aged man. While Vinayakan plays the lead role in this film, the cast also includes veteran writer Raghunath Paleri, actors Roshan Mathew, Priyamvada, Lal and Dileesh Pothan in supporting roles.

Speaking about the film, the director said in an interview to Silverscreen, “Thottappan takes place in a fictional island cut off from the mainland. It is based on a short story by writer Francis Nerona, published by DC Books. But the film’s screenplay has taken liberal deviations from the source material. It explores the themes of love and friendship. I would call it a romantic thriller, although it is a mix of genres. It is centered on a man who becomes a guardian to a girl he is not related to. It might seem complicated to the outside world, and it is their relationship we are trying to explore through Thottappan. Among Christians in Kerala, the word Thottappan means godfather – someone who has the stature of a birth father.”

The technical crew of the film includes Suresh Rajan for cinematography. The screenplay for Thottappan has been written by PS Rafeeq. The film is bankrolled by Shailaja Manikandan and Devadas Kadanchery.

It may be recalled here that the first look poster of this film was released some time ago which showed Vinayakan holding a baby aloft. Priyamvada plays the role of this girl he raises.

Shanavas made his debut as a director with Kismath in 2016, a film that was based on some true life incidents. It told the real life story of a 23-year-old Muslim man (played by Shane Nigam) falling in love with a 28-year-old Hindu Dalit woman (played by Shruthy Menon).
