Wipro's Consumer Care & Lighting on Tuesday said it has forayed into home automation space with an integrated solution to convert ordinary homes into 'smart homes'.

"Our home automation system (Wipro Z Nxt) integrates lighting, air-conditioners, geysers, curtains, safety accessories, internet protocol (IP), cameras, music control and home theatre with in-built sensors to alert in case of fire, gas leakage or intrusion," said the city-based company in a statement.

The automation system also enables the house owner to control the home's appliances from any smart device, from anywhere in the world.

The entire system reportedly costs a fifth of similar systems that already exist. The system doesn’t even need the existing switches and the wiring in the house to be changed to install it.

"All the electrical appliances can be controlled from a single application on an Android or iOS device, a remote or a wall-mounted device through voice control by multiple users," it said.

The system also allows key-less door entry by enabling remote-operation of the door locks in a house.

"The home automation system combines technology with efficiency to provide a sustainable solution with up to 40 per cent power savings," the company's Senior Vice President, Consumer Lighting and Switches, Sanjay Gupta said in the statement.

He told Indian Express that the system can be installed in only four to five hours, and costs about Rs 2 lakh for a 3-BHK home. In comparison, existing systems cost `10 lakh for a 3-BHK.

“The home automation market is evolving at a rapid pace and Wipro Z Nxt will tick all the boxes for even the most demanding customers. With the smart-homes set to be a reality, home automation solutions are fast becoming a default, must-have feature in every home. We have integrated all electrical devices, safety, security and entertainment features in a single app, while at the same time preserving the aesthetics of the home and giving the user the convenience of choosing the operating method,” Financial Express quotes him as saying.

The global software major had hived off its non-IT businesses like Consumer Care and Lighting in 2012.
