This week, a Public Interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Delhi High Court against the song “Lalla Lalla Lori” from the recently released film “Welcome to Karachi”. The NGO Citizens for Better India, who filed the petition, claimed that the song promotes liquor consumption and maligns a nursery rhyme.According to The Indian Express report, the PIL states, “The petitioner impugns one specific song from the film being propagated as ‘Lalla lalla Lori, Daaru Ki Katori’, it being highly objectionable as it will have extremely negative effect on the society and especially the children and which promotes consumption of intoxicating drinks which are injurious to health and which is against the scheme of the constitution and specifically against the article 47 of the constitution of India amongst others.” But this is not the first time that a Bollywood song is making a nursery rhyme into a surrogate ad for alcohol consumption or maligning it in other ways. Here we list some of those Bollywood songs that have been inspired by nursery rhymes:"ABCD" from "Yaariyan":This song gives an altogether new meaning to the English alphabets. While the original rhyme has helped children learn the alphabets, this might just introduce them to the ABCD’s of liquor. Video of iVKEcznDqDg"Johnny Johnny" from "Entertainment":“Johnny Johnny? Haanji /Tuney pee hai? Naaji /Munh ko kholo- hawji /Jhooth boleya? Naaji” By replacing sugar with alcohol they have made this song dangerously tempting for children. Video of qJKtqkODzI8"Jack and Jill" from "Paying Guests":Though the lyrics have been left untouched, some parents might consider the visuals inappropriate for their children. Video of eJ8Uj-znC0A"Machli jal ki rani hain" from "Machli jal ki rani hain":While the lyrics of the song are taken from a children’s nursery rhyme, the film itself received an ‘A’ certificate from the Censor Board. Video of Rhrko_CdwSs"Chaar Botal Vodka" from "Ragini MMS 2":Though unconfirmed by the composers, many say that the tune of the song is taken from the Marathi poem “Yere yere Pausa”. If that is the case, then the tune will be familiar to many kids making it all the more catchy for them to sing.  Video of UnKKhQuB7GY"Lalla Lalla Lori" from "Welcome 2 Karachi":Over the years many might have fallen asleep listening to their mom’s singing this popular lullaby but today the song has made it a party anthem.According to a report by The Times of India, in a study published by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) they have found that "An increasing proportion of children experience alcohol and drunkenness at early ages.” With nursery rhymes talking about alcohol taking on such luring tunes, it might become harder for the younger generation to resist.
