When Balika Vadhu launched, it portrayed a child bride’s situation sensitively, and quite progressively. But, like people who’ve made a bad joke and then dug themselves in deeper by trying to explain it instead of apologising, the show’s writers should have known when to call it quits.

With the serial making it to the Limca Book of Records for crossing 2,000 episodes, here’s a look at what happened in India and the world while Balika Vadhu was still stuck in its regressive time warp with the men in latest fashions while the women somehow remained in the mid-18th century until fairly recently.

India went to the moon

Osama Bin Laden was killed in June 2013

June 2014- While Anandi was busy keeping her household together, AP was split into two, Telangana was born

Anandi is with Shiv and Jagya has re-re-married or something. Lost the thread of the plot, actually. Meanwhile TN CM Jayalalithaa went to jail, got released and became Chief Minister twice over.

Anandi’s troubles show no sign of ending.

But Indian women are doing great on multiple fronts including sports; they’re talking about their sexual encounters (OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!!), going on loiter and pinjra tod campaigns and what not.

As for Hindi serials, we need laws on protecting people from boredom and ear-drum troubles.
