'90s kids have a great reason to rejoice. The cult supernatural thriller series made during their generation--Marmadesam Vidathu Karuppu--will be aired every day from Monday to Saturday by Kavithalayaa productions on their official YouTube channel.
The announcement was made by the production house on Friday. They have already released 10 episodes.
In Marmadesam’s anthology, Vidathu Karuppu was one of the most successful seasons. This season with 82 episodes explores the rural cult of Karuppu Sami and mysterious deaths in a village. It was based on the book written by Indra Soundarrajan titled Vittu Vidu Karupa! Indra Soundarrajan wrote both the dialogues and screenplay for the television series.
The author in an interview with The Hindu had disclosed that he first came across the Karuppu legend in Madurai. “I met this man, a rowdy of sorts, whom even the police feared. But when he passed by the Karuppu temple, he walked in prayerful respect. The man feared Karuppu. His story took off from there,” he had said.
Marmadesam was first aired in Sun TV between 1995 and 1998. It was then taken over by Raj TV and Vasant TV. This series defined the childhood of many youngsters who still get spooked by the spine-chilling neighing of the horse in the title song.
This television series had talents like Devadarshini, who had just started her career in acting. Devadarshini in an interview to Silverscreen said that Marmadesam catapulted her to fame. “It was a big turning point in my life. The show was already a major hit, and the second installment – Vidathu Karuppu – that I was a part of, established me in the industry.”
Vidathu Karuppu was directed by Naga. Explaining the cult status of the show, the director in the same interview remarked that he continues to get at least an email a week from youngsters who rediscover the show online.
The series was produced under the banner Min Binbangal which is owned by Kaisalam, son of late legendary director K Balachander.
