Dulquer Salman’s role as the legendary actor Gemini Ganesan in Mahanati has won him accolades from all quarters. The actor, who has been accepting challenging roles, has said in an interview that he would be very uncomfortable doing safe roles.
He has been quoted by the Indian Express as saying: “We all knew we were doing something important, something very special. To tell the story of legendary actress Savitri was something I believed in. This was a role away from my home territory in Kerala, hence an added challenge.”
Titled Mahanati in Telugu and Nadigayar Thilagam in Tamil, it is a biographical period film based on the life of former South Indian actress Savitri. The film had Keerthy Suresh playing Savitri while Dulquer Salman played her husband and actor Gemini Ganesan.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film was bankrolled by C Ashwini Dutt, Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt under the banners of Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinemas. Mickey J Meyer had composed music for this venture with Dani Sanchez-Lopez cranking the camera and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao editing it.
Mahanati/Nadigayar Thilagam has an impressive line-up for stars in the cast and they include Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Akkineni, Vijay Devarakonda, Akkineni Naga Chaitanya, Rajendra Prasad and Bhanupriya.
Several top stars and directors including Akkineni Naga Chaitanya, Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Naresh, Krish, Srinivas Avasarala and Sandeep Vanga appeared in guest roles in this flick. The film released to packed houses on May 11 and is doing well at the box office.
